The Fellowship of the Ring is the first movie of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson. All three movies are based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Story
*Spoiler Alert*
The movie is about a very powerfull ring, that belonged to the Dark Lord Sauron. He has been searching for it for a very long time. The ring is in the possesion of an old hobbit, called Bilbo Baggins, who found it in the cave of a creature, Gollum, that found the ring a long time ago. On Bilbo’s birthday, he decides to leave his hometown and gives everything he owns, including the ring, to his nephew Frodo Baggins.
When the powerfull wizard Gandalf the Grey finds out that this is Sauron’s ring, he tells Frodo he has to escape and that they need to go to Rivendell. While Frodo goes there, together with three other hobbits, Gandalf goes to the head of his order, Saruman the White, to ask for help. Saruman turns out to be in service of Sauron and locks Gandalf up in his tower. Meanwhile Frodo and the other hobbits get attacked by the Nazgûl, Sauron’s servants. They get rescued by the ranger Aragorn but Frodo gets stabbed by one of the Nazgûl. When they arrive in Rivendell Frodo is healed and Gandalf appears. He has escaped from Saruman’s tower and asks for a council. After the council the fellowship of the ring was made. The four hobbits and Gandalf will be joined by Aragorn, the elf Legolas, the dwarf Gimli and Boromir. Their goal is to throw the ring into the fires of Mount Doom, so it will be destroyed.
On their journey they’ll have to go through the dwarf Mines of Moria. They find out that all dwarfs have been killed, and that Gollum is following them. Inside the mines they confront the Balrog, an acient Demon that kills Gandalf. The rest of the group escapes the mines and continue their journey. When they arrive at Parth Galen, Boromir gives in to the Ring’s corruption and tries to take it from Frodo. Frodo escapes and after Boromir realizes what he has done, he defends two of the other hobbits from the attacking Uruk-hai, a new breed of orc fighters made by Saruman. He gets killed and the two hobbits get kidnapped by the Uruk-hai. Frodo decides to leave the group but his best friend Sam, the fourth hobbit, goes with him. When Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli find out Frodo is gone, they decide to track down the Uruk-hai and rescue the two other hobbits.
Cast
Elijah Wood – Frodo Baggins:
The main character from the movie. He is the one that has the burden of having the Ring. During the first movie he discovers that his journey is very dangerous. Elijah Wood did a very good job of playing Frodo, and because of that he will always be remembered as Frodo Baggins.
Ian McKellen – Gandalf the Grey:
Gandalf the Grey is a powerfull wizard that guides the fellowship of the ring through the Mines of Moria. He defeats the Balrog but the Balrog takes Gandalf with him to the grave. I like Ian McKellen as Gandalf, however I like him more as the bad guy Magneto in the X-men movies.
Viggo Mortensen – Aragorn Elessar II:
Aragorn travels with Frodo and defends them from the Nazgûl. Later he turns out to be the heir of Gondor’s throne. I don’t know much about Viggo Mortensen but I liked him in the Lord of the Rings movies.
Orlando Bloom – Legolas Greenleaf:
Legolas is a very skilled archer and a prince of the elves. He and Gimli have some trouble in the beginning, but they become friends later in the movies. I liked Orlando Bloom in the Pirates of the Carribean movies and also in the Lord of the Rings movies.
John Rhys-Davies – Gimli:
Gimli is a dwarf fighter with his axe as his weapon of choice. I don’t know John Rhys-Davies from anything else then these movies, but i liked him as Gimli. He added some humor, even when everything seemed doomed.
Sean Bean – Boromir:
Boromir is a prince of the Stewards of Gondor. He is considered as “weak” because he was tempted by the Ring and even tried to steal it from Frodo. In the end of the movie he gets killed by three arrows while defending his group members. I know Sean Bean also from Game of Thrones, where he plays a role that can be compared with Boromir. However he didn’t play in the movie for a very long time, his acting was good.
I would recommend this movie to everyone who likes movies. This is one of the most legendary trilogies every made and they have a very high rewatch value (rewatch value = can you watch the movie again and will you still be amused by it). I have seen the trilogy for three times now and I wasn’t bored a single minute. So if you haven’t seen it already, watch it as soon as possible.
